LEEP is an employment program which provides ex-offenders and other disadvantaged individuals with the tools needed to succeed in the workforce. LEEP balances training with sessions that develop skills for obtaining and maintaining employment. The skills sessions involve self-management, job preparation and an introduction to computers.
Target Participants: Our target population is multi-barriered men and woman who have been in jail, recently released from jail or are at-risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. Our participants face a number of barriers including criminal records, poverty, homelessness, addictions, and lack of employment training including sufficient access to employment training programs that deal with reintegration issues of the ex-offender.
One of the facilitator’s roles has evolved into supporting individuals who are involved in our program outside of the John Howard Society; this includes appearing as an agent entering pleas or adjournments in court, meeting with social aid workers assisting clients in getting extensions for individuals staying in shelters and ensuring they have a supported living environment.
Learners participate in the following classes: AVP, Self Management, Job Preparation, and Introduction to Computers, Standard First Aid, H2S Alive, and Construction Safety Training/WHMIS. The Alternatives to Violence Program (AVP) is a four day intensive experiential workshop that provides a trusting and supportive environment where our clients can explore, learn and develop: self-awareness, self-esteem, problem solving, cooperation and decision making skills. In addition, these skills are reinforced with role play exercises. These new skills/tools will enable our clients to overcome the barriers that they face with a positive approach and increased self confidence.
