Berkana House

  • Program Description
  • Referral Sources

BerkanaHouseBerkana House is a community residence that provides a safe, respectful and empowering environment for women transitioning from prison to the community.

We seek to support women who are in the process of successfully re-establishing themselves in the community following a period of incarceration.

The "community of the residents" is encouraged and supported through informal interaction with staff and other residents, as well as through one mandated house meeting per week. House meeting activities may include a guest speaker, an outing, a craft, discussion, or a shared meal.

Because of the fact that women will eventually be leaving the residence to live on their own in the community (the average stay is six months), women are encouraged to link with necessary supports and programming in the community, rather than offering additional in-house programming.

Berkana House is an apartment-style building of four individual suites and two, two-bedroom suites.Residents are responsible for their own meal preparation. The facility includes a common gathering area for residential meetings and collective kitchens, as well as a common laundry room.Staff are available twenty-four hours per day (midnight shifts are awake shifts).
