The Criminal Justice Education (CJE) program aims to increase awareness and knowledge of the criminal justice system for both adults and youth, among Calgary and area community members. Highlights are the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), the Adult Justice System, mock trials and the impact of crime on victims. Students are given opportunities to examine and express their concerns about crime and criminal justice issues. Community members can explore the values and application of the adult Criminal Justice System and the YCJA. CJE staff act as resource personnel for community members regarding changing legislation about Canadian laws.
CJE staff bring presentations to students in their schools in Grade 6, Junior High and Senior High. We also accommodate requests from community groups and organizations.
The CJE program is housed at the Calgary John Howard Society main office. Community members and practicum students are welcome to become involved in our education program on a volunteer basis. The John Howard Societies across Alberta have also developed written reference materials on the topic of the Youth Criminal Justice Act which the public may obtain. They include a YCJA Handbook, a YCJA Youth Handbook and a Parent’s Guide to the YCJA.
We have also developed resources on the YCJA for use during our presentations including a grade 6 video & student workbook with accompanying teacher guide, a junior/senior high video, and teacher’s support package including student and teacher evaluation forms.
